A strategy board game with Scandinavian roots that gained popularity during the Middle Ages, it held a position in society similar to that of chess. The game features various versions that differ in:

- Victory conditions: either bringing the king to the edge or corner of the board

- The ratio of attacking (black) to defending (white) pieces
